Idaho School for the Deaf, Proposal of $800,000 cut from 2010 budget. Mississippi School for the Deaf: proposal of undetermined cut Commentary: There is some hope. As you can see, FL had a proposal of 820,732 dollars budget cut for its state school for the Deaf and Blind, but the governor vetoed it. If you want to help, please contact the Deaf school(s) and ask how you can help prevent the budget cuts from being implemented. Often contact to the governor of that state is necessary. This would be a good time for you all to flex your civic muscle and contact all your fellow alumni to urge them to contact the governor how important state schools are for Deaf Children. Numbers speak the loudest : the more people they hear from, the more they will reconsider about the budget cuts. Keep an eye out for the news. There may be more announcements of Deaf school budget cuts. However, there are several schools extempted from the budget cuts: Ohio School for the Deaf, Kentucky School for the Deaf, Louisiana State for the Deaf, Mississippi Schools for the Deaf More school escaped the pain of budget cuts, but I forgot to write them down as I was focusing on the schools subjected to budget cuts. When you are in doubt, contact your school and see how you can help. The list is constantly being edited due to new information. October 29, 2008DHHARC’s New Supervisor in Las Vegas

There is a great need for quality education for our hearing impaired children. Lake Mead Christian Academy is addressing the need by starting a Deaf Christian Education Program for 2nd thru 4th grades. (1st and 5th will be considered if space is available) Subjects will be taught in English and Sign to have a better comprehension of subject matter. Due to the commitment of a small class size, space is extremely limited. The program will be designed as a multi-ability classroom giving all students the opportunity to excel and learn. The students will enjoy a smaller class size for a more focused learning experience. This program will start with the new academic year of 2007/2008. Applications for enrollment are available on the website www.lmca.org . You may contact the program director Charlotte Courson ccourson@lmca.org with any questions. From the Nevada Appeal newspaper: Jarid Shipley Appeal Staff Writer, jshipley@nevadaappeal.com April 15, 2007 Nevada is facing a crisis that is preventing a portion of its population from getting a good education. The problem is based in one of the foundations of education, language. “California has issued a state emergency because of the lack of qualified sign language instructors and interpreters and while Nevada hasn’t declared it, we are facing an even bigger crisis,” said Cindy Frank, Deaf Studies instructor and program coordinator at Western Nevada Community College. Frank said the problem most affects school-age children because more than 70 percent of interpreters being used in schools aren’t certified and interpret less than half of what is said correctly to deaf students. “The deaf children are suffering because of this. A lot of them are graduating without the education or skills they need,” Frank said. That was one of the focuses of the inaugural Deaf Pride Day at WNCC on Saturday. The event was organized by the college’s American Sign Language Club as a way to bring awareness and support to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. “We were so impressed with the outpouring of support, even from people who don’t know a word of sign language, but wanted to help,” said Julie Balderson, ASL Club president. The event included a raffle, face painting, games and a 4-H representative with animals on display. The money raised will be used to provide training for interpreters and stipends to allow parents with deaf children to take ASL classes. Western Nevada Community College was one of the first colleges to offer classes in ASL almost 10 years ago and currently is one of few that offers a two-year degree in Deaf Studies, according to Frank. American Sign Language is the third most-used language in the United State and Canada, surpassed only by English and Spanish. Frank said the other purpose of the event was to provide a positive example for deaf children. “We want to let deaf kids know they are not alone, there’s nothing to be ashamed of and they are not disabled, they just use a different language,” Frank said. Shannon Archer is a graduate of WNCC’s program and currently serves as an interpreter at Wooster High School. “I took ASL because I wanted to be a teacher and I thought it would be useful. I found out I loved the language and didn’t really want to teach, so I switched,” Archer said. Archer said the biggest challenge facing deaf students is their isolation. “Not being able to communicate with everyone they come in contact with. I’m really the only one, as the interpreter, they can communicate with and because of that they don’t know the little things. They don’t have the incidental hearing to pick up on things like where to buy prom tickets,” Archer said. Wednesday Snith understands how being deaf can isolate you from others. The 33-year-old is taking advantage of WNCC’s programs to get better at signing. “It helps a lot, it’s a great program,” Snith said. "I’m learning how to sign better and learning more language. It’s giving me the ability to communicate better. Snith also had some advice for anyone who meets a deaf person. “Don’t back off from a deaf person. It’s OK to just introduce yourself, say hello and make a simple gesture,” Snith said. March 29, 2007Streamed Captioning on website

Through Deaf Eyes, a two-hour PBS documentary exploring nearly 200 years of Deaf life in America, will air early next year. The film was inspired by the exhibition, History Through Deaf Eyes, curated by Jack R. Gannon of Gallaudet University. The documentary will air nationally on PBS on Wednesday, March 21 at 9 p.m. ET (check local listings). The film presents the shared experiences of American history, family life, education, work, and community connections from the perspective of deaf citizens. Interviews include community leaders, historians, and deaf Americans with diverse views on language use, technology and identity. Bringing a Deaf cinematic lens to the film are six artistic works by Deaf media artists and filmmakers: Wayne Betts, Renee Visco, Tracey Salaway, Kimby Caplan, Arthur Luhn, and Adrean Mangiardi. Poignant, sometimes humorous, these films draw on the media artists own lives and are woven throughout the documentary. But the core of the film remains the larger story of Deaf life in America – a story of conflicts, prejudice and affirmation that reaches the heart of what it means to be human. Major funding for Through Deaf Eyes is provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, PBS, The Annenberg Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Private individuals have also contributed to the funding of this project. The extensive outreach campaign is funded in part by Sign Language Associates. Outreach partners are the National Association for the Deaf, Gallaudet University, the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology, and California State University-Northridge. As part of the outreach campaign, numerous local organizations, some in association with their public television stations, will mount events and discussions exploring the issues raised in the film. A comprehensive Web site, found at www.pbs.org, accompanies the film. The site includes interviews with the deaf filmmakers whose work is featured in the documentary, while also inviting viewers to submit their own stories, photographs, and films. These will become part of the archival collection of Gallaudet University. A companion book is being published by Gallaudet University Press. November 6, 2006New Monthly Deaf Social in Sparks

Hi all I found this article from DeafDigest...good news for our Deaf Community...Keep it up~Laura Herb Larson...Off-Hand The broadcast of “Herb Larson...Off-Hand” on KNPB, the PBS station in Reno, Nevada, was considered by many in the Northern Nevada deaf community as the biggest thing that’s hit the area since the advent of captioning. Herb Larson and his co-host, interpreter Bill Pugin, appeared at a pre-broadcast press conference in early September and introduced themselves to the local press and the areas deaf community. Reaction at that time was extremely positive and many younger deaf people were being introduced to Herb Larson for the first time, since the original “Off-Hand” program aired in Los Angeles during the 1980’s. Reaction to the all-new TV show, from both deaf and hearing audiences, was overwhelming. The station received dozens of positive phone calls and e-mails and the station management is now working with Sign City TV, the shows producers, on expanding the program into a network series. Like who did Herb interview? Guests included country singer Lacy J. Dalton who has started a foundation to save the wild Mustang horses that are being slaughtered; authoress Calamity Jan Pierson, who writes books about Nevada ghost towns; and Kenny C. Guinn, the Governor of Nevada. Sheldon I. Altfeld, who founded The Silent Network back in 1979, directed the show; Temma Keatan-Hammond, a local Nevada TV producer, produced the program; and David H. Pierce, who owns DAVIDEO Productions, served as Executive Producer, Post Production Supervisor, and Executive In Charge of Production. Altfeld and Pierce are the principals of Sign City Television, LLC, which produces programs exclusively for deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences. DeafNation Expo

Presenting... Howie Seago & Nat Wilson in The Last Con. About the Show On September 17, 2005, Howie Seago and Nat Wilson will present, in artful and comedic enhancement, using American Sign Language, a dramatic adaptation of a medieval French farce titled “The Last Con”. The show is approximately 75 minutes long and features these two internationally renowned Deaf actors portraying five characters in full costume and engaging in a rollicking, rambunctious battle of wits. This presentation is truly unique in its reflection of “the old days” as performed in old style signing, gestures and mime without vocal narration. About the Actors After gaining highly acclaimed recognition as top-caliber actors during their stints with the National Theater of the Deaf, Seago and Wilson pursued separate careers in show business. Seago appeared in TV guest roles on Star Trek:The Next Generation, Hunter and The Equalizer. He also appeared in Beyond Silence, an Oscar Award nominee for Best Foreign Film in 1998. Wilson continued to tour internationally with the National Theater of the Deaf for 12 years, performing a wide range of electic roles. Now, these two fine actors have combined their energy, experience, creativity and passion for theatre into Deaf Moose Theatre, an independently run theatrical company where they convert their dreams and visions into performing art. Nevada Association of the Deaf is fortunate to have the opportunity to host the spectacularly unique ‘The Last Con” by this wonderfully talented team. Hello one and all! I want to share with you some good news we received a few weeks ago from the Office of Disability Services. NVAD/DHHARC has been awarded the statewide Deaf and Hard of Hearing advocacy and telecommunication equipment distribution programs. We are thrilled being the recipient and have every intention to make it successful by collaborating with each of you in whatever way we can to enhance the lives of the target population and outreaching to the communities, agencies, and schools. Come July 1, with a staff of six, we will begin the new challenge with two offices, one in Carson City and the other in Las Vegas. Then eventually we will have one in Reno within a year then work towards having outreach offices in other rural areas. If you have any ideas how we can collaborate with you and your agency, please feel free to get in touch with me as soon as you can. I can’t let this pass…It is important to me that I thank those of you have written in support of our bid to manage the statewide service delivery program. Also thanks to those who continue to collaborate with us in many different ways. I look forward to working with you all. It all is deeply appreciated! For a better community for all! Forward we go!
