ORGANIZATION: Nevada Association of the Deaf (NVAD) Deaf and Hard of Hearing Advocacy Resource Center (DHHARC) is a statewide advocacy, resource, telecommunications distribution, and direct service center offering advocacy, referral and community education services throughout Nevada. GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under direct supervision from DHHARC performs duties in planning, developing, coordinating, implementing and supervising the youth program and activities for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in Nevada, scheduling activities, facilities and volunteers as required, assisting with public relation duties such as writing letters, preparing and distributing flyers, press releases and brochures, encouraging local youth to participate in the programs, and preparing plans for youth activities. Other duties will include helping coordinate outside entertainment, such as tickets, sports events, etc., and maintaining inventory of art/craft supplies and equipments. Job duties also include travel; night and weekend may be required.

SALARY: $15 per hour for 20 hours a week

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be proficient in American Sign Language and other communication modes used by Deaf persons, have demonstrated capability to successfully work with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community
• Able to administer youth activities
• Considerable knowledge of developing and administering recreation program for youth
• Able to balance multiple tasks and priorities as well as be a good team player
• In-depth knowledge of Deaf Community’s needs
• Performs other duties as assigned.

*Develop and disseminate informational and publicity materials on DHHARC programs, services, resources and community activities to the general public

*Coordinate and provide public presentations to service providers, government entities, schools and businesses
*Coordinate consumer requests and services, equipment distribution and loaning program

*Distribute resource directories and materials

The Headquarters is in Carson City with additional centers opening soon in Las Vegas (July, 2005) and Reno (September, 2006). DHHARC is an established, ongoing operation looking forward to this expansion in order to provide statewide services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing consumers and all Nevadans.

POSITION: Regional Advocate (2)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Plan and coordinate outreach, advocacy, referral and telecommunications programs targeting Deaf and Hard of Hearing Nevadans.

SALARY: $33,000 to $38,000 DOE, plus customary benefits.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Cooperate with Center Director and Staff in the development and implementation of documented Center goals, objectives, and strategies .

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

*Daily interaction with Deaf and Hard of Hearing consumers on a variety of issues
*Daily interaction with various Nevada businesses, agencies, and organizations
*Dissemination of information consistent with DHHARC’s mission statement and funding obligations, apart from personal philosophy
*Possess excellent skills interacting with the deaf and hearing culture.

DUTIES:
*Provide innovative outreach and advocacy throughout Nevada with special emphasis on rural and isolated populations/communities
*Inform and advocate for consumer rights/choices
*Provide peer counseling and support, education, and advocacy
*Provide information and referral services RA
*Distribute resource directories and materials
*Develop and disseminate informational and publicity materials on DHHARC programs, services, resources and community activities to the general public
*Coordinate and do presentations to service providers, government entities, schools and businesses
*Maintain reporting and case management database of consumer requests and service needs
*Work closely with community service providers, DHHARC staff, and agencies to enhance service programs, evaluations, and outcomes
*Research and apply to possible funding sources for program operation and expansion
*Work with the Nevada Communication Access Council and serve as a liaison between community service providers and the public
*Promote a consumer choice and independent living philosophy at all times
*Keep abreast of all activities and legislation impacting the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at local, state, and national levels
*Coordinate annual events and participate in various projects with Central staff
and in the community
*Provide educational assistance to parents, students, school districts, and post secondary programs
*Prepare and submit reports as specified by the Executive Director, and in keeping with funding requirements
*Perform other DHHARC related functions as assigned by the Executive Director when needed to achieve DHHARC’s goals.

QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
*Fluency in American Sign Language and thorough knowledge of Deaf Culture and history;
*Positive interpersonal skills, flexibility, and knowledge of working with persons of multi-ethnic/cultural backgrounds;
*Knowledge and understanding of laws protecting rights of individuals with disabilities;
*Excellent signed communication skills, excellent written and verbal skills, and the ability to present information in a clear, concise manner;
*Literacy in computer applications, including word processing and database management (DHHARC uses Microsoft Office Professional);
*Ability to handle multiple tasks while maintaining activities, projects, organization and meeting deadlines;
*Professional manner in dress and demeanor when interacting with others, both inside (team player) and outside the organization;
*Reliable transportation and willingness to work flexible hours and/or days when needed;

PREFERRED:
*Bachelor’s degree in related field (two years of professional experience with Deaf service programs may be substituted for each year of education);
*Personal experience with a disability and/or working with persons with disabilities;
*Knowledge of community resources available for people with disabilities;
*Knowledge of interpreting profession, certification, sources to target language tactics;
*Minimum of two years proven, successful community advocacy experience in a similar position or program;
*Detailed knowledge of all Relay systems, equipment and services;
*Three years of experience in a non-profit organization or direct services program;
*Personal experience and/or an intimate knowledge of advocacy tactics that promote consumer choice, empowerment and independent living
*Excellent organizational skills and experience managing projects and events
