Q: What does the agency do?A: The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Advocacy Resource Center is a non-profit agency to educate and empower deaf, hard of hearing and speech disabled individuals to achieve self-independence. The center also works with the community to ensure equal communication access for deaf and hard of hearing individuals through outreach, community building and advocacy. Services also include Telecommunication Equipment Distribution in Nevada.
Q: Where does the DHHARC get the money from?A: We get funding from the State – Division of Aging and Disability Services. We also get money from private donors, corporations, fundraising events, and other grants.
Q: Are you a state agency?A: No, we are a non-profit private agency.
Q: Are your services free?A: It does not cost anything to become a consumer and most of our services are free. Some programs, like Camp SignShine or Youth Events, do involve fees.
Q: Who runs your organization?A: DHHARC is governed by a Board of Directors that oversees DHHARC. DHHARC Board also employs an Executive Director to manage grants and oversee the office staff.
Q: Are your services available in rural areas?A: Yes, DHHARC provides statewide outreach services in rural areas. We can travel to any rural area, but please contact DHHARC and set up an appointment first.
Q: Who can receive free telecommunications equipment?A: All Nevada residents with a certified document stating the individual’s hearing/speech loss and those who are limited in the use of a regular telephone in Nevada. Please contact our office and we will send you the necessary forms.
Q: Can a deaf or hard of hearing individual receive free interpreter services from DHHARC?A: No, DHHARC only provides a list of qualified interpreters but does not provide interpreter services.
Q: Where can I find a sign language interpreter?A: We have a list of interpreter referral agencies and interpreters that we can fax, email or mail to you.
Q: Where can I get information about the sign language interpreter/CART registry?A: Refer to The Division of Aging and Disability Services at (775) 687-4452 (voice) or check its website, www.dhhs.nv.gov and click “Interpreter CART Registry” on left side.
Q: How can I learn more about Deaf and Hard of Hearing events in Nevada?A: Check out our "Announcements" page for new event information or visit our "Calendar" to search for Deaf and Hard of Hearing events by date. You can subscribe to our eNews here or send us your email address for future flyers and announcements.
Q: Does DHHARC offer social events for deaf and hard of hearing people?A: Yes, we offer social events in Sparks, Las Vegas, Fallon, Elko and Pahrump. We also offer Hard of Hearing support group meetings in Las Vegas and Sparks. You can check our “Calendar” or you can call our office and ask about upcoming events.
Q: Can I borrow from your library?A: Yes, it is at no cost. Here is the list of available books and DVDs.
Q: Where can I find ASL classes?A: You can contact your local community colleges, universities, school district or our office.
Q: Does DHHARC accept volunteer work?A: Yes. Please contact the DHHARC office nearest you for more information.
